Mother
/ Teacher / Author / Poet /
Songwriter / Singer
As a child, Susan never knew what
she wanted to be when she grew
up, but somehow,
writing, performing,
teaching, and mothering have become her cherished
occupations.
" I have
traveled many emotional and spiritual roads over the years but my present desire
to preach and
practice the art of self love
presides over most of my life choices."
Like many
artists, her work has always been a natural part of the fabric of her
life. While
growing
up on the Canadian prairies, writing
songs and poetry were early childhood passions for Susan.
In her teens, she was trained
as a classical singer while banging out folk / rock songs
on her guitar and playing lead roles in high school theater productions. It
was no surprise that
the decade to
follow,
found Susan pursuing concurrent interests in drama and music. She
received a Bachelor of Fine Arts, in
Theater, from the University of
Victoria; at the same time she was
writing and performing as a solo artist and in various vocal
groups,
from Winnipeg to Victoria and north to Dawson City.
"My relationships with people and my
desire to
understand what makes us all 'tick' have always taken precedence over
my need to have a master plan for my future. I spent most of my
formative
years observing myself and the world around
me,
and interpreting my responses through my writing."
After
becoming a mother,
Susan shifted her song
writing
focus
towards reporting the delights and difficulties of being a child as
she began to see the world through he eyes of her growing daughters.
When her children were old enough, the
family formed a band called Kinfolk! and performed on stages
grand and
humble in western Canada. In 1997 the group recorded there first CD:
Kinfolk -"I'm Full" which has
entertained radio audiences both in Canada and
abroad.
Writing children's books is the most
recent phase in Susan's creative wandering. Presently she is producing
a
CD of her children's stories as well as continuing to write and record
songs for children and adults. Always in seach of more clarity she
draws inspiration from her
significant relationships as she follows her work into her unfolding
future.
"
In a perfect
world I would stay at home and write songs and stories and go for walks
and sing with my children and set my own schedule...wait a minute
that's what I am
doing...lucky me!
At the
moment,
Susan lives in Toronto
with her best friend, Jamie
Musselwhite, their two
children and their cats Jack and Phoenix. She
now has many of dreams for the future,
some of which
include creating opportunities for empowering young girls to live well,
and building
houses for those without adequate shelter. Her latest mantra, "Take
life peacefully."
